Last Day of Summer with Jamie, Dan & Co

Last Day of Summer is a new creative collaboration between Jamie, Dan & Co and various saltwater communities led by Jamie Lewis & Dan Koop. We create & curate site-responsive multi-artform experiences that engage audiences to become participants. In Perth we will be making a sound work, a bit like a pop-up radio station, for people to listen to at the beach.

From Saturday 22 February to Sunday 2 March we are exploring the beaches of Perth and want to discover the various saltwater cultures and communities that enjoy the beautiful coastline.

Who are we and what do we do?

Last Day of Summer is a new creative collaboration between Jamie, Dan & Co and various saltwater communities led by Jamie Lewis & Dan Koop. We create & curate site-responsive multi-artform experiences that engage audiences to become participants. In Perth we will be making a sound work, a bit like a pop-up radio station, for people to listen to at the beach.

Below you can listen to some of our previous sound works featuring local community members that we have presented in unique locations. Jamie & Dan have a long history of creative projects together, but we also each have our own professional employment in arts organisations and studies that inform our practice and how we operate. Jamie Lewis  was recently the CEO of Next Wave and is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts. Dan Koop was recently the Senior Producer of Flash Forward for City of Melbourne and is currently undertaking a PhD in Public Art at Deakin Uni.

What are we looking for now?

From 23rd February to 2nd March we are working with Perth Festival to get to know the variety of beaches up and down the Perth coast and understand the different saltwater cultures of each place.

We expect there are strong active communities focused around each Surf Life Saving Club, but we are also interested in other beach loving community activities such as jogging, dog walkers and all kinds of casual beach users. We love local stories, so right now we are just soaking up the local flavour and histories of each place to encounter the essence of each location and explore future creative and storytelling potential. Some of the stories we hear may form the basis of our final work, but for now we are just soaking up the atmosphere and understanding what makes each place and community unique. We start with casual community activities, like a simple coffee or chat on the beach, but as the project evolves we may get to know interesting people and communities that would like to get further involved in the process of local storytelling and creative exploration.

Where might this conversation take us in the future?

As well as getting to know local social stories and community habits, we are curious to see if Surf Club facilities might be appropriate to support future presentations with Perth Festival in 2026 or 2027.

In the past we have conducted casual interviews with locals, for example shoppers and stallholders at fresh food markets, which we have turned into oral histories and guided tours using smartphones. However, the idea for Last Day of Summer is to create a pop-up radio station specifically for listeners at Perth beaches. Instead of a loud and intrusive broadcast from large speakers, we plan to allow people to listen quietly from small speakers on their beach towels or via waterproof headphones. This way people can have a located listening experience that uses the beach scene as a backdrop, whilst also having a unique simultaneous and collective experience you get with theatre or live sport.

So while we wouldn’t be using a lot of indoor spaces at a Surf Club (i.e. this isn’t an indoor theatre show!) there might be some terrific partnerships between our creative team, the Perth Festival and a Surf Club that help us to build communities and tell unique local stories.
